Tips for Opening Your Swimming Pool for the Season

As the days grow longer and the temperatures begin to rise, it’s time to prepare your pool for the warm months ahead. Opening your pool properly ensures crystal-clear water, a safe swimming environment, and an enjoyable summer experience.

Here are some tips to get your pool ready for the upcoming season.

If you used a pool cover over the winter, remove any standing water with a pool cover pump, after carefully remove the cover, clean it well before storing it to prevent mold and mildew.

Check your pool’s essential equipment, including the pump, filter, and heater. Reattach any disconnected hoses and plumbing. If you have a saltwater pool, inspect and reconnect the salt cell system.

Over the winter, your pool’s water level may have dropped. Using a garden hose refill it until it reaches the appropriate level, typically the middle of the skimmer opening.

Before turning on the filtration system, skim the surface to remove leaves, branches, and other debris. Vacuum the pool floor and brush the walls to prevent algae buildup.

Once the pool is clean, turn on your pump and filter system. Allow it to run for at least 24 hours to circulate and filter the water properly.

Use a pool testing kit to check the pH, chlorine, alkalinity, and calcium hardness levels. Adjust the chemicals as needed:

  • pH: Should be between 7.2 and 7.6

  • Alkalinity: 80-120 ppm

  • Chlorine: 1-3 ppm

  • Calcium Hardness: 200-400 ppm

After months of inactivity, shocking the pool helps eliminate bacteria and organic contaminants. Follow the instructions on your shock treatment product and run the pump overnight for full circulation.

Ensure that all safety equipment, such as pool ladders, handrails, and fences, are secure and in good condition. If you have a pool alarm, test it to ensure it is functioning properly.

Double-check that everything is working correctly, from the pump to the skimmer baskets. If you notice any issues, address them early to prevent costly repairs later in the season.

Once your pool water is clear and chemically balanced and you are sure everything is in good condition and working properly, it’s time to dive in! Keep up with regular maintenance throughout the summer to ensure a safe and refreshing swimming environment.

Happy swimming!
